Key Stage 4 Curriculum

Carrickfergus Academy aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which meets the requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum but, most importantly, addresses the needs and aspirations of our pupils. In addition to non-examined subjects such as PE/Games and non-exam RE, all pupils in Year 11 will study eight subjects in preparation for GCSE examinations. English Language, Mathematics, Science and LLW/Prince’s Trust, are compulsory for all pupils; therefore, pupils must choose four additional subjects set within option blocks. Pupils are encouraged to study a broad balance of subjects and to allow appropriate career opportunities in the future.

The GCSE Option booklet provides details of all the KS4 subjects on offer together with information about the choices available and the way in which different subjects are made available to pupils. Pupils should ensure that they choose subjects suited to their particular career path and equally those in which they are most likely to succeed.
